Liposuction Q & A
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that targets common areas of diet- and exercise-resistant fat, allowing you to effectively sculpt away unwanted fat and get the physique you desire.
The procedure, which is done under general anesthesia, requires a small incision in each treatment area to accommodate the liposuction device, a thin tube called a cannula.
The tube, which is attached to a vacuum device, is inserted through the incision and moved around beneath your skin. As the cannula targets fat deposits to break them down, the vacuum suctions them out, safely and effectively.
Although there are a variety of liposuction techniques, all forms of liposuction surgery use suction to remove fat.
Where Can Liposuction Be Used?
Liposuction is a versatile treatment that’s effective for getting rid of stubborn localized fat deposits on many areas of the body, including:
- Abdomen and love handles
- Breasts (including male breasts)
- Hips and saddlebags
- Buttocks and thighs
- Chin, neck, and face
- Back and upper arms
- Knees, calves, and ankles
Although liposuction can take care of persistent fat in these areas, the procedure doesn’t remove cellulite, and it can’t tighten loose skin.
If you have cellulite or loose skin, you can combine liposuction with other procedures, such as an arm lift or a tummy tuck, in a treatment plan that’s designed to help you achieve the best possible results.
Am I A Good Candidate for Liposuction?
As a sculpting tool, liposuction is an ideal solution if you have stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond to diet and exercise, or if you have localized areas of fat that seem disproportionate with the rest of your body.
Because liposuction isn’t a weight loss tool, however, it shouldn’t be considered an alternative to diet and exercise, or as a solution to obesity.
Liposuction may be an excellent option if:
- You’re healthy and in good physical shape
- Your body weight is relatively stable, and you’re no more than 20 pounds overweight
- You have good skin elasticity and minimal amounts of excess skin
- You’d like more definition or a slimmer profile
What Can I Expect After the Procedure?
The healing process following liposuction typically takes several weeks, so it’s important to follow post-procedure instructions to make the speediest recovery. This may include wearing a compression garment for a certain period.
You should be up and about within a day or two of surgery, but you may want to stay away from work for several days following your procedure. You should also avoid any strenuous activities, including vigorous workouts, for about a month, or until your doctor gives you the go-ahead to resume normal activities.
Although you won’t see full results right after your procedure, you’ll notice a slimmer, more contoured shape in each treatment area as the swelling subsides and your body heals.
