Labiaplasty (Vaginal Rejuvination) Q & A
What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty, which is the most commonly requested vaginal rejuvenation procedure, is a cosmetic surgery that reduces the length of the labia minora, or the outer portion of the female genitalia.
When the labia minora extends past the mons pubis, or the rounded mass of fatty tissue that lies over the pubic bone, it can cause pain and irritation, particularly when it’s pulled or twisted during activities like cycling and horseback riding. A long labia minora may also cause discomfort during intercourse.
Most women, however, opt to have labiaplasty because the appearance of their genitalia makes them feel self-conscious. Childbirth, significant weight loss, and aging can all change the contours of the vaginal structures, resulting in tissues that have stretched over time.
What are the Benefits of Labiaplasty?
For women who experience pain during intercourse or while riding a bike, the benefits of labiaplasty can’t be overstated.
If you’re mainly interested in its aesthetic benefits, labia reduction can dramatically alter the outward appearance of the vagina, which may boost self-confidence and improve undergarment comfort.
Labiaplasty can also improve sexual sensation for women whose anatomy structure decreases pleasure during intercourse; even women who never experience lessened sensation may find that the procedure contributes to an enhanced sexual experience.
Am I a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?
If you’re unhappy with the appearance of your vagina and it makes you feel self-conscious, labiaplasty may be an ideal solution for you.
Whether you were born with an atypical structure, or your genitalia went through changes during puberty or following weight loss, childbirth, or menopause, labiaplasty can help correct:
- Long, hanging, or obvious labia
- Extruding vaginal lips
- Asymmetrical appearance
- Vaginal/labial discomfort
Before you undergo labiaplasty, you should be in good health, both physically and emotionally, and set realistic expectations for your results. If you’re a smoker, you should quit prior to your procedure to make healing easier and ensure optimal results.
What is Labiaplasty Surgery Like?
Labiaplasty requires a general anesthetic or intravenous sedation to ensure total comfort throughout the procedure. Because the initial incisions go on either side of the labia, they’re barely noticeable once they’ve healed.
After your surgical team members at Cosmetic Surgery Center remove the excess tissues, they suture the supporting tissues into place. Given the sensitivity of the area involved, your surgeon will close the incisions using ultrafine sutures that minimize scarring.
What Can I Expect After the Procedure?
Applying a bandage or dressing to the area immediately after surgery minimizes swelling and bruising. As your incisions heal over a few days, it may help to use an inflatable cushion when sitting.
While swelling will somewhat obscure your results for the first several days, you’ll be able to see your new, contoured shape once the swelling dissipates. You should be able to resume normal activities, including sexual intercourse, in two to three weeks.
