How Can Men Benefit From Hormone Therapy?
For years, your reproductive hormones, namely testosterone, quietly worked behind the scenes, regulating operations in several areas of your health. From your sexual health to your muscle mass, testosterone casts a wide net, and it’s only when these hormone levels dip that you realize to what extent.
As part of our efforts to help our clients achieve overall well-being, inside and out, Dr. Trent Fogleman and the team here at Cosmetic Surgery Center offer hormone replacement therapies for both men and women.
If you thought that women were the only beneficiaries of hormone replacement therapy, think again. Here’s a look at how hormone replacement therapy can benefit men, too.
All that testosterone influences
Testosterone is considered the male sex hormone, as it’s responsible for some of the more “male” characteristics, such as body hair and a deeper voice.
Produce by your testes, these hormones also play a number of important roles in your body and influence your:
- Libido (sex drive)
- Sperm production
- Muscle mass
- Distribution of fat
- Red blood cell production
In addition, some of your brain cells have testosterone receptors, which means the hormone can affect your mental and emotional health..
Signs of low testosterone
Given the many roles that testosterone plays in your body, it shouldn’t be surprising that a testosterone deficiency can lead to significant symptoms, including:
- Loss of muscle mass and weight gain
- Fatigue
- Low sex drive and sexual function
- Irritability and mood swings
- Depression
- Loss of body hair
The severity of these symptoms depends upon the deficiency, and they can range from mild to severe.
The causes of low testosterone
There are several issues that can cause low testosterone, but age is the most common. When you reach your 30s, your body produces about 1% less of the hormone each year. At first, the drop is barely noticeable. But as you get older, the deficit can add up. In fact, as many as half of men over the age of 80 have clinical testosterone deficiency.
Outside of age, there are other issues that can lead to testosterone imbalances, such as trauma to your testicles, radiation treatments, and having obesity.
Treating low testosterone
If your symptoms are caused by lower-than-normal hormones levels, we offer an innovative form of hormone replacement therapy — bioidentical hormone pellets. Every three to four months we insert pellets under your skin, and they slowly release the hormones into your system. The term bioidentical refers to the fact that these replacement hormones are molecularly identical to the hormones your body produces.
As we rebalance your hormones, you should start feeling more like your old self again.
