Eyelid Surgery: a Minor Procedure That Delivers Major Results

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a specialized cosmetic procedure that rejuvenates the appearance of your eyes.

Here at Cosmetic Surgery Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Dr. Trent Fogleman provides full-spectrum aesthetic and wellness care, offering everything from noninvasive treatments to advanced minimally invasive cosmetic surgery procedures like blepharoplasty.

Upper and lower eyelid surgeries use distinct approaches to achieve optimal results. Read on to explore eyelid surgery and how this minor surgical procedure can provide major rejuvenative results.

Upper eyelid surgery

Upper blepharoplasty corrects sagging, puffiness, and loose skin in the upper lids.

With upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Fogleman creates small incisions following the natural crease in your eyelid. He removes skin and fat, repairs muscles as necessary, then sutures the skin using tiny, precise stitches. The incisions are well hidden whenever your eyes are open, so they’re essentially invisible.

This restores a youthful, refreshed appearance to your eyes. It can also restore a clear line of sight for people with severe skin sagging that droops over the eye, impeding vision.

Lower eyelid surgery

Lower eyelid surgery approaches vary based on patient needs. The surgery covers the lower lids, which extend from under the lower eyelash line down to the transition to the upper cheeks.

Dr. Fogleman may create incisions just beneath the lower lashes to remove skin and fat. This approach does leave thin scars, but they’re very hard to see as they blend in with the lower lash line.

If you need fat removal or redistribution (or even fat transfer), but don’t have extra skin, Dr. Fogleman may perform a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. This technique involves an incision within the lower lid, so there’s no visible scarring.

Some of our patients opt for laser skin resurfacing alongside a blepharoplasty. This treatment smooths wrinkles, like crow’s feet, and refines skin texture surrounding the eyes for a remarkably rejuvenated look in the entire eye area.

After eyelid surgery, our patients often remark that they look years younger, more rested, and overall rejuvenated. We often hear comments such as, “I wish I’d done this years ago!”

Why is eyelid surgery considered a minor surgical procedure?

Blepharoplasty is considered a minor or moderate surgery. The procedure may be performed under IV sedation instead of general anesthesia, depending on the circumstances. The incisions are tiny compared to some other cosmetic procedures like a facelift, and the amount of skin and fat that’s removed is also very small.

While blepharoplasty still carries a risk of complications like bleeding and infection risk, these may be minimized by choosing a qualified and skilled surgeon like Dr. Fogleman.

With his precise, specialized techniques, Dr. Fogleman is known for creating an enhanced appearance while maintaining a patient’s unique natural look.
