Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing—also known as laser peel, laser vaporization, or lasabrasion—is one of the newest technologies devoted to giving patients stronger, healthier, younger-looking skin. This type of treatment harnesses the power of concentrated light beams to break down damaged layers of skin and promote the growth of new skin cells, leaving behind a fresh, healthy appearance.

Laser skin resurfacing may be accomplished using either CO2 lasers or Erbium lasers. Both types help reduce the appearance of skin blemishes, wrinkles, lines, and scars.

Am I a Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

The benefits of laser skin resurfacing are clearer, healthier-looking skin, free of scars, wrinkles, discolorations, or other signs of damage. So if you have experienced any of these unwanted features, or if you simply desire younger-looking skin, then you may be a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing. The real key is to become as informed as possible, and make sure that you have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of this procedure. If these outcomes match your personal health and body image goals, then laser skin resurfacing may be right for you.

Some things that may make you a poor candidate for laser skin resurfacing include:

  • Active and severe acne
  • Accutane use within the past two years
  • Certain types of damage or scarring in areas to be treated
  • Active bacterial or viral infections
  • Refusal or inability to properly care for treated skin following procedure

How Laser Skin Resurfacing Works

Depending on your unique needs and conditions, OKC cosmetic surgeons Dr. Fogleman and Dr. Benien may administer preparatory skin treatments in the weeks leading up to the actual laser skin resurfacing. When the day of the procedure arrives, your cosmetic surgeon will use a local anesthetic to numb your face, and you may be given a sedative to further help you relax. The skin is then cleaned, and specialized lasers are used to resurface the skin. Following the procedure, you will be given painkillers and specialized dressings to help with any immediate redness, swelling, or tenderness.

By using highly concentrated light beams, set at very specific wavelengths and pulse durations, Dr. Fogleman and Dr. Benien are able to break down and remove damaged or irregular skin. Typically, laser skin resurfacing is used to remove the outermost skin layer, known as the epidermis. At the same time, the laser heats underlying skin layers, which activates and encourages new skin growth. Both of these actions work together to promote the creation of new, healthier and younger-looking skin.

What Happens After Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Skin that has been treated with laser skin resurfacing usually reacts the same way it does to a mild sunburn. This means that some degree of redness, swelling, pain, or itching is to be expected in the days immediately following treatment. In more severe cases, the skin may blister, ooze, and crust.

Five to seven days after receiving treatment, the skin will dry out and peel. This is the desired outcome, as the peeling leaves behind a new layer of skin. While this new skin is continuing to grow and strengthen, it is critical that it receive proper care and protection. Always wear sunscreen and keep the skin clean. Use any creams or ointments your cosmetic surgeon provides.

The results of laser skin resurfacing may last for several years, but because wrinkling and other forms of skin damage occur naturally with age, future treatments may become necessary.
