Labiaplasty procedure, also known as labioplasty, is the surgical reduction or alteration of the external female genitalia, including the mons pubis and internal or external labia. This procedure is mainly performed to adjust the appearance of the genitalia, but it may also be undertaken to improve comfort during sexual intercourse.
Reduction of the labia can dramatically alter the outward appearance of the genitalia, and may improve self-confidence, allow for a greater variety of clothing options, and improve comfort levels when wearing clothing. This procedure may also improve sensation and contribute to enhanced sexual experience.
Any women with large or hanging vaginal lips or otherwise atypical external genitalia may be excellent candidates for this procedure. Some of these conditions may be genetic, but they may also develop following puberty, childbirth or normal aging.
The labiaplasty is designed to address a number of issues. Some of these issues include:
For the most positive outcome, it may be advisable for you to quit smoking well before the surgery to ensure proper wound healing.
As the surgery occurs in a particularly sensitive area, a general anesthetic or intravenous sedation is used to ensure comfort during this surgery. The initial incisions are made on either side of the labia, along the natural lines of the genitalia so that they will barely be noticeable.
Excess tissue or skin is removed, and, if necessary, the supporting tissues are sutured in place. The incisions are closed using fine sutures to ensure the least scarring possible. The area is treated with an antibiotic ointment, and a bandage is applied.
After the procedure, bandages or dressings may be applied to the area to minimize swelling and bruising. The incision lines should heal within a few days. During this time, it may be helpful to rest on an inflatable cushion. A sitz bath may also be soothing for the procedural area during this recovery period.
Results will be immediately noticeable, though partially obscured by swelling. This initial swelling should gradually dissipate over the next few weeks as the area settles into its permanent appearance. Sexual intercourse may be resumed in two to three weeks. Some of the rare complications of labiaplasty include pain, infection, and an asymmetrical appearance.
