The facial fat grafting procedure offers a two-fold improvement of body contours by removing fat from a problem area of the body via liposuction and depositing it in areas of the face that require a dermal filler.
Injecting a dermal filler into the face is an excellent way to bring balance and fullness to the face, making the tissue beneath the skin firmer and giving the surface a more youthful appearance. Using your own fat greatly reduces the chances of rejection or infection in addition to the benefits of liposuction.
Candidates for Facial Fat Grafting
To insure the best outcome, it may be helpful for patients to stop smoking, as smoking has a negative effect on healing. Good diet, exercise, and overall physical health are all beneficial for a positive result.
Facial fat grafting is an excellent way to increase the youthfulness of the face. Some of the possible benefits include:
- Decreased appearance of facial lines
- Increased youthfulness of skin
- Improved skin quality
- Boost to facial volume and fullness
- Balancing of facial appearance
Patients without sufficient body fat may not be able to undergo this procedure if they do not have enough readily available fat to facilitate the grafting.
How Facial Fat Grafting Works
Intravenous sedation or general anesthetic are administered prior to the procedure for the patient's comfort. A small incision is made in the fat donation area and a liposuction device is inserted. The area may be massaged to loosen the donor fat.
After the fat has been removed, it may be purified and processed to prepare it for grafting. This purified fat is injected into specific areas in the face in a targeted manner to provide balance and contouring. The surgeon may massage the injection area to distribute the fat during or following the injection.
What Happens After Facial Fat Grafting?
Much of the injected fat will be permanent, though there is a small percentage of the injected fat that will be absorbed by the body following the procedure. This amount will be taken into calculation, and as a result the face may take a few days to achieve balance.
The swelling should subside after a week or two, and the face should reach its eventual appearance after a few months of healing. Generally, patients may be able to return to their regular schedule after about a week.
