Augmenting the cheeks may be done through a variety of surgical methods in order to increase the balance of the facial structure and provide a full, firm, and natural appearance.
Cheek augmentation is often performed using implants that are surgically placed through incisions in the mouth. Alternative sites for the implantation incisions may be within the hairline or inside the lower eyelid. These various situations are implemented based on the location of the implants and the augmentation specifics.
Candidates for Cheek Augmentation
This procedure gives the best outcome when performed on patients whose faces have reached their final physical maturity following adolescence. It may also be helpful for faces that have been altered by trauma, disease or previous surgery.
Cheek augmentation is designed to give a more proportionate facial image, improving balance and contour. Facial changes that can be made include:
- Improved facial balance
- More natural facial proportions
- Stronger or more gentle facial contours
This procedure is best performed on physically healthy non-smokers whose facial structures have reached their final physical proportions. Discontinuing smoking and some herbal supplements may be helpful for the best surgical outcome.
How Cheek Augmentation Works
Depending on the specific procedure, intravenous sedation or a general anesthetic will be administered to ensure that the patient has the highest level of comfort throughout the procedure.
An incision is made within the mouth, inside the lower eyelid or hidden in the hairline, and the implantation area is exposed. A solid, biocompatible implant that has been specifically selected and customized for your surgery is inserted within the incision area. The incisions are closed using sutures or stitches to ensure minimal scarring.
What Happens After Cheek Augmentation?
After the procedure, the area may be bandaged and wrapped to minimize any swelling or bruising from the procedure. A tube may be inserted to drain any fluid buildup.
The incisions should heal within a few days, allowing you to remove your bandages. Within a few weeks your face should be healed to reflect the new contours.Your facial movements may be temporarily restricted or altered during this time. Additional rare side effects may include discoloration, numbness, sensitivity, skin irregularities and infection.
