Breast augmentation revision is done to correct a problem that has occurred with a standard breast augmentation procedure. It may require the surgical repair of an implant or even the complete removal and replacement of the implants.
Some problems that may contribute to a need for this procedure include capsular contracture, nipple sensitivity, loss of sensitivity, rippling and rupture. This procedure may be required when a breast augmentation is done poorly, but may also be required for reasons outside of the control of the surgeon.
Candidates for Breast Augmentation Revision
Candidates for this procedure include healthy women who have recently undergone breast augmentation surgery in OKC and have experienced a problem since their surgery.
This procedure may be used to treat a variety of issues. Some of these issues may include:
- Dissatisfaction with current breast augmentation size or shape
- Medical concerns
- Replacement after natural life of the implants
Cessation of smoking prior to the procedure may help the body's natural healing process.
How Breast Augmentation Revision Works
General anesthetic or intravenous sedation will be started prior to the procedure, followed by the first incision. The incisions for breast augmentation revision may be made around the nipple, in the armpit or under the breast, and may or may not follow the same lines as the original augmentation procedure.
The old implant is removed through the incision, and a new implant is put in its place. The new implants must be placed with extreme caution, particularly if the previous implants had to be replaced due to a problem such as defect or rejection.
What Happens After Breast Augmentation Revision?
Recovery from s breast augmentation revision procedure is similar to breast augmentation. The incision areas will be covered with dressings or bandages. An elastic garment may be worn for a few weeks to decrease swelling and bruising. Tubes may be used for drainage of fluid buildup.
The incisions should heal in a few days, and normal activity may resume within a few weeks, though intense activity should be avoided for at least six weeks. The incision lines will continue to fade for up to six months. Slight risks of this procedure include infection, asymmetry and revisionary surgery.
