Breast augmentation enlarges breast size through the surgical placement of saline- or silicone-filled implants. Some women choose the surgery because they desire breast enlargement, while others want to restore breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss.
This is an excellent procedure for improving or restoring breast volume or symmetry. It may also be a good fit for those who feel that their breasts are not proportional to the rest of their body, or who would like to add additional contouring to their body profile.
Ideal candidates for this procedure are healthy, fully-developed women who are self-conscious about the size, shape, or balance of their breasts and wish to make them more proportionate with their body.
To prepare for this procedure, you should quit smoking, maintain a stable weight, eat a healthy diet, and exercise regularly.
Breast augmentation begins with intravenous sedation or general anesthetic. The incision is made under the breast, in the armpit, or just below the nipple.
This incision is kept as small and discreet as possible to minimize scarring. Silicone or saline breast implants may be used for this procedure.
The implant is inserted into the space opened by the incision and may be positioned either on top of or behind the pectoral muscle.
Layered sutures are used to secure the breast tissue and implants, and the incision is closed using sutures, skin adhesive, or surgical tape to minimize the appearance of scarring.
Bandages may be applied to the incisions immediately following the breast augmentation procedure. A compression garment may be used to support the new breasts and minimize the appearance of swelling and bruising.
The incisions should heal in a few days, and the swelling should begin to go down. Results will be immediately clear, though it may take a few weeks for the new breasts to settle into their permanent size, shape, and position. The scarring from the incisions may take up to six months to fade to its permanent state. Some of the rare complications of this procedure include infection, asymmetry, rejection of the implants, and revision surgery.
