Botox® Cosmetic

Botox is one of the most widely used and popularly recognized cosmetic procedures today. Botox is derived from the botulinum neurotoxin and, when injected into the skin, it has the ability to temporarily paralyze and relax muscles. This gives the skin above the relaxed muscles a tighter, firmer appearance.

Through controlled use, Botox helps reduce skin lines and wrinkles, and it can also help treat a variety of skin and muscle disorders. The most common sites for Botox injections are directly above and between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and in the forehead, but they are also frequently administered to the neck and other regions of the face.

Am I a Candidate for Botox Injections?

The most significant benefits from cosmetic Botox treatments are the noticeable reductions in unwanted skin lines and wrinkles. Often these features occur naturally with age and can sometimes give people the appearance of frowning or scowling. By relaxing and temporarily paralyzing the muscles responsible for these wrinkles and lines, Botox injections create smoother skin and more relaxed, natural-looking facial expressions.

Candidates for Botox treatments include healthy individuals seeking to remove unwanted lines or wrinkles from their skin. Most commonly, this includes lines in the forehead, between the eyebrows, crow’s feet in the skin surrounding the eyes, and thick bands on the neck. The key for anybody considering Botox injections is to determine how effective this treatment will be in meeting his or her unique body image and health goals.

Along with producing smoother skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles, Botox injections are also given as treatment for certain types of dystonia, a disorder characterized by involuntary and long-lasting muscle contractions that can lead to abnormal body postures, discomfort, and even pain. By temporarily paralyzing and relaxing these muscles, Botox provides significant relief for patients suffering from dystonia or other related disorders.

Some conditions that may make you a poor candidate for Botox treatment include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation
  • History of negative reactions to Botox
  • Younger than 12 years old
  • Infection at site of injection
  • Preexisting motor neuron diseases

How Botox Treatments Work

Before any Botox treatments are administered, the cosmetic surgeon conducts a thorough examination of all injection sites. After identifying the areas most in need of the treatment and ensuring there are no contraindications present, the surgeon administers small doses of Botox via injection.

Because Botox introduces only temporary paralysis and muscle relaxation, repeat treatments will likely be needed to maintain a smooth skin appearance. The first repeat treatment may be administered as early as two or three weeks following the initial injection. Subsequent treatments should occur approximately every two or three months.

What Happens After a Botox Injection?

Botox is a common and routine cosmetic procedure. Patients are generally able to return to everyday activities shortly after receiving an injection. The most common side effects are mild bruising or swelling. These should subside fairly quickly and will be localized at the injection site. In rare cases, patients may experience a stinging sensation in the skin surrounding the injection site, or even brief periods of flu-like symptoms.

Following a patient’s initial Botox injection, the option of future treatments should be explored. This allows individuals to maintain the positive results of such treatment.
